Chapter 6: The Dial-Up Interrogation

The Wicked Witch of West Texas settled onto a levitating dining chair, her Prada Marfa bag glinting under the kitchen’s fluorescent lights. Across the table, Bob the DogGod remained perfectly motionless, his tail giving a single, enlightened thump against the velvet cushion. The silence in the room was absolute, frozen solid by the stationary electron crystal state that Lulu had anchored.

"Well, don't just stand there with your mouth open, Lulu," the Witch remarked, nudging a plate of mini-cupcakes toward the center of the table. "The Medusa Recordex is hovering right over your lemon bars, and its carrier wave is currently synced to 56k dial-up frequencies. If you have a question for the rhizome, ask it before the line drops."

Lulu stepped forward, her bare feet crunching softly on the white sugar-sand. She looked into the serpent-head apparatus. The ruby-glow eyes flickered in rhythm with the faint, underwater harmonica hum that still echoed from the sink basin.

"Show me the link," Lulu commanded, her voice surprisingly steady. "Bridge the 2026 Nowhere, Texas anomalies backward. Trace the structural foundation to the 2011 macroscopic quantum logs."

The Recordex hissed, a sound like static electricity passing through a wet wool blanket. Its dual-tone mechanical voice vibrated directly into the kitchen tiles:

"Query received. Navigating the rhizome backward. December 05, 2011: Two Diamonds Quantum Entangled. The original macroscopic baseline is locked. The physical relocation of the author to Walla Walla in 2013 was the direct macroscopic ripple of this initial entanglement. Cause and effect are inverted. The story did not record the move; the move anchored the story grid."

Lulu blinked, the realizations clicking into her brain like heavy brass tumblers falling into a lock. "So Walla Walla isn't a trap," she muttered, looking out the window at the crystallized, pink cotton-candy mountains. "It's the physical anchor for the entire maze."

"Of course it is, dullard," the Witch sighed, pouring herself another cup of jasmine tea. "Every labyrinth requires a physical coordinate to bind the mythosphere to the terrestrial grid. You thought you were running away from boredom, but you were actually just moving toward the center of the playground."

Bob the DogGod leaned forward, his dark eyes reflecting the pale light of the Sirius Star. "The maze is a grand game, Lulu Belle," he barked softly, his voice carrying the calm weight of absolute reality. "You entered it in the dark with no memory, simply to see if you could remember yourself under these exact built-in circumstances. Relax. Surrender the Coyote plotting. There is nothing outside of you but mirrors, and nothing inside of you but you."

"But what about the Sugarland vampires?" Lulu asked, her hand tightening around the Magical Ruby Bling Ring in her pocket. "And the mechanical clones at the door?"

Before Bob could answer, a loud, heavy-metal guitar riff erupted directly from the top of the refrigerator. The six-inch plastic manifestation of Herb the Battle Unicorn began to vibrate violently, the green Glime oozing from its seams suddenly crystallizing into sharp, brilliant emerald sparks. The Tiny ScrewAction Goring Horn began to spin at hyper-frequency, preparing to break the room's frozen frame.
